Communal

The worship of God is participatory, and our voices join in the hymns of our Baptist tradition.

Liturgical

Northminster observes the Christian calendar of liturgical seasons - Advent – Christmas – Ordinary time – Lent - Easter – Ordinary time, creating a rhythm of preparation (purple), celebration (white), and growth (green).

Lay Led

The people of the church participate in planning and leading worship. The liturgist offers the meditations and litany, and the lay reader leads the litany and offers prayers.

Lectionary Based

Scripture readings are chosen according to the Revised Common Lectionary as a way of remembering that we are part of a larger community of faith.

Welcoming

The Narthex (foyer of the sanctuary) is our place of welcome, with a quiet smile before the service and a hearty handshake and robust welcome after the service.

Intentional

Worship is planned and intentional, participatory rather than performative. The choir and the pulpit are off-center, leaving the table of communion as the central focus during worship.

SUNDAY MORNINGS AT NORTHMINSTER

Sunday Morning Worship is the heartbeat of our common life at Northminster. Our services are oriented around the seasons of the Christian Year and we read together from the Revised Common Lectionary, connecting us with Christians the world over.

Hymns are sung, prayers are lifted, a sermon is offered, and our liturgy each week is shaped by writers within the congregation. We mark the milestones of our faith through baby dedications and baptism. All are welcome at the Lord’s table for communion on the first Sunday of each month.

Since we begin our service keeping silence, the congregation often lingers in the Narthex after worship to welcome guests more warmly.

All are welcome to participate in the holy sounds and silences of communal worship as we gather to open our hearts to the love of God and to remember that God is always with us as we seek to love our neighbors.
