Missions

Missions are an integral part of our family of faith. Children and youth include missions opportunities in their programming and with special service days. We enjoy a special relationship with our Adopt-A-School, Spann Elementary, and our church kitchen is often used for meal prep for Stewpot, Meals-on-Wheels, Billy Brumfield House, or caregiving.

During Advent, we look forward to building care packages as a part of our Boarding Homes Project to provide gifts and essentials to Jackson’s network of adult care facilities, and to the appearance of the Angel Tree as we partner with community parents to bring joy to their children at Christmas.

Our Pastors’ Benevolence Fund is supported generously by the congregation and provides assistance to individuals within our community and beyond. At least 20% of our church budget each year is committed to missions efforts through the work of our Missions Committee, Denominational Relations Committee, and Wider Net Committee.

In cooperation with the policies set up by Partners in Education of the Jackson Public Schools, the Adopt-A-School Committee provides volunteers for active involvement in meeting the needs of students and faculty of Spann Elementary School.

The first Sunday of Advent marks the appearance of the Angel Tree, an opportunity to help create a little Christmas joy for families in our community.

Late Wednesday afternoon or in the wee hours of Thursday morning, Northminster volunteers deliver breakfast to Billy Brumfield House, a men’s shelter provided by Stewpot Community Services.

A Northminster tradition since 1978, needed toiletries and comfort items are purchased, and on the first weekend of December, we gather in the Great Hall to create care packages complete with homemade cookies and deliver the packages to various boarding homes around the city.

The Denominational Relations Committee is responsible for making recommendations for monetary support and maintaining contacts in our Baptist network. Through this work, Northminster supports Baptist identity institutions such as the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, seminaries and divinity schools, Passport Camp, and Baptist News Global. The committee’s choices to provide monthly support fall into 4 categories:

  • Theological graduate and Mississippi-sited undergraduate education
  • News and Advocacy
  • Network Support and Faith Formation
  • Long-term Mission Support

The following organizations are financially supported through our general budget each year:

Each week volunteers gather to either prepare meals or deliver meals to homebound seniors.

Our Missions Committee serves as a research unit for Northminster in the area of needs outside the immediate church family. The committee reviews current partners and seeks out new partners. The following organizations are financially supported through our general budget each year:

The pastoral staff provides direct assistance to those in our community in the form of paying utility bills, providing rental assistance, food, transportation, funeral expenses, and disaster relief. We have also partnered with Canopy Children’s Solutions, an agency that connects families with state, local, and federal community resources to help prevent situations that lead to childhood trauma.

The Wider Net Committee organizes Northminster’s decades-long ministry presence in Jackson’s MidCity neighborhood. Much of the work over this past year has involved providing direct assistance to our friends and neighbors. We continue to work with neighborhood and city leaders to make capital improvements in the neighborhood such as a camera for Gordon Park, demolition and cleanup of property, and consistently mowing neighborhood spaces. We hope to increase opportunities for Northminster members to participate in direct service in the neighborhood and to further our relationship with other community partners.
