Mission Spotlight: Adopt-a-School

September 14, 2026

In 2027, Northminster will celebrate its 40th year of partnership with Spann Elementary School! Through our Adopt-a-School Committee, we have sought to offer encouragement, appreciation, and practical support to the teachers, students, and staff throughout the school year. From praying over the school community on the first day of school to welcoming new teachers with gift cards, providing teacher breakfasts and lunches, and offering treats during testing, the committee looks for meaningful ways to remind the Spann staff that they are valued and cared for.

Throughout the year, the committee also helps make special moments possible for Spann students. We provide gift cards for the Book Fair and readers for Read Across America, candy for Trunk-or-Treat and prizes for the Mathathon. Students are also welcomed to Northminster for special experiences, including Christmas caroling in the Great Hall, and an organ demonstration in our sanctuary, and the Spann faculty joins us for worship each year.

Last year, we began sending Book Buddies to Spann. Once a week, members of Northminster go to the school to read with their student. Last year, almost every student who worked with a Book Buddy passed the MAAP 3rd grade ELA Assessment.

We are grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside the Spann community, building relationships and finding new ways to cheer them
